Which Technology Fits the Process?
Pressure swing adsorption, known as PSA, uses alternating vessels filled with carbon molecular sieve. Membrane generation separates gases through hollow fibres. Atlas Copco’s nitrogen generation overview explains both methods and confirms that each depends on a suitable supply of clean, dry compressed air.
For a first assessment, membrane generation is generally considered for moderate-purity duties. PSA is considered when the process needs higher purity or a tighter residual-oxygen limit. That is a starting point, not a final selection rule. Flow, pressure, duty cycle and the cost of preparing the compressed air can change the recommendation.
Some low-volume or intermittent users will find that on-site generation does not justify the plant and maintenance involved. We will say so if the site figures point that way.

Safety Is Part of the Specification
The Health and Safety Executive’s guidance warns that nitrogen can displace oxygen and create an asphyxiation hazard.
Generator location, ventilation, oxygen monitoring and other controls must follow the site risk assessment and the way nitrogen could be released or accumulate. We coordinate the equipment layout and discharge arrangements with those site controls. A technically correct gas specification is not enough if the installation creates an unmanaged confined or poorly ventilated area.

The generator depends on the compressed-air system feeding it. Wet, contaminated or unstable air can undermine output and increase maintenance.
