Nitrogen Generator Castleford: On-Site Gas Supply for Industry

A nitrogen generator at a Castleford site produces nitrogen from compressed air at the point of use. Its performance depends on matching purity, flow, pressure and duty to the process.

Search Air, Atlas Copco Premier Distributor since 2002, specifies and supports complete systems covering compressed-air supply, treatment, storage, installation and maintenance.

A Nitrogen Generator Must Match the Process

The first decision is the nitrogen specification. A laser-cutting process, packaging line and controlled-atmosphere application can place different demands on gas purity, residual oxygen, pressure and peak flow. Our nitrogen and oxygen generators are assessed against the application rather than selected from a general capacity figure.

We also examine the operating pattern. A process running continuously needs a different capacity and storage arrangement from one with short, heavy peaks. Receiver size, available compressor capacity and planned production changes all affect the recommendation.

Our Yorkshire engineers support Castleford from our Leeds and Sheffield depots. We do not assume that a particular generator size or technology will suit every local site.

PSA and Membrane Systems Solve Different Problems

Assess membrane first for moderate-purity duties and PSA first when the process requires higher purity or a tight residual-oxygen limit.

Pressure swing adsorption, or PSA, passes compressed air through alternating beds of carbon molecular sieve. A membrane generator uses differential permeation through hollow fibres. These operating principles and their different purity applications are explained in Atlas Copco’s nitrogen guidance.

Purity has a direct effect on equipment selection and compressed-air demand. Specifying more purity than the process needs can increase the size and operating cost of the system. Specifying too little can compromise the process. We confirm the required specification before recommending either technology.

Benefits of On-Site Nitrogen Generation

The Compressed-Air System Is Part of the Generator

Atlas Copco states that both PSA and membrane systems require clean, dry compressed air. The compressor, dryer, filters and condensate management therefore belong in the nitrogen specification. They are not separate background equipment.

The benefits of on-site nitrogen generation depend on having enough spare compressor capacity at the required pressure. We check normal site demand, peak air use and the generator’s operating pattern together. A compressor that is already close to full load can change the commercial case.

Energy, treatment and maintenance must be included when comparing on-site generation with delivered gas. In some Castleford installations, the existing compressor and treatment package will be suitable. Elsewhere, the recommendation can change once actual capacity and inlet-air conditions are measured. Our engineers also assess service access and the availability of genuine Atlas Copco parts.

Safety, Storage and Backup Need One Plan

Nitrogen can displace air and create an asphyxiation hazard. The HSE’s asphyxiation guidance makes clear that ventilation and any atmospheric monitoring must follow the site risk assessment.

The assessment must also consider storage, maintenance and loss of supply. A planned shutdown may be manageable during a quiet shift. An unexpected stop during continuous production may require backup gas or additional stored capacity. The correct arrangement depends on the cost and operational effect of downtime at your site.

What Search Air Checks Before Quoting

A useful quotation starts with process data. We will need:

  • The required nitrogen purity or residual-oxygen limit
  • Normal and peak nitrogen flow
  • Delivery pressure at the point of use
  • Shift pattern and operating hours
  • Existing compressor output and current air demand
  • Feed-air treatment and inlet conditions
  • Storage, backup gas and permitted downtime

We then assess the generator technology, compressed-air capacity, treatment, receivers, installation requirements and maintenance needs. The result is a practical equipment recommendation with clear, agreed pricing. Work outside the agreed plan is identified and quoted separately.

Our air compressor services in Castleford can cover the associated compressor and treatment equipment as part of the same system review.

To specify a nitrogen generator for your Castleford site, send Search Air the purity, flow, pressure and operating-hours data. We can then arrange a site assessment and establish what the complete installation must provide.
