Nitrogen Generator Bradford: On-Site Supply for Industry
The cylinder bank is running low while production still has a shift to complete. For Bradford sites with recurring nitrogen demand, on-site generation can reduce dependence on routine gas deliveries, provided the system is specified for the process rather than chosen from a headline flow rate.
Search Air, Atlas Copco Premier Distributor since 2002, assesses the generator, compressed-air supply, treatment, storage and backup provision as one system.
How Does an On-Site Nitrogen Generator Work?
An on-site generator separates nitrogen from clean, dry compressed air. The two main technologies are pressure swing adsorption and membrane separation.
Pressure swing adsorption, usually shortened to PSA, passes compressed air through alternating carbon molecular sieve beds. A membrane generator uses differential permeation through hollow fibres. Both technologies require properly treated feed air, as explained in the Atlas Copco nitrogen generation guide.
Our nitrogen and oxygen generators can form part of a complete installation covering the air compressor, dryer, filtration, receiver, controls and gas storage.
PSA or Membrane Generation for a Bradford Site?
The required nitrogen purity and residual oxygen limit should determine which technology is assessed first.
| Process requirement | Technology to assess first |
|---|---|
| Moderate purity with a steady operating pattern | Membrane |
| Higher purity or a tight residual oxygen limit | PSA |
| Variable or uncertain demand | Site assessment needed before selection |
That is a starting point, not a universal sizing rule. Flow, delivery pressure, inlet conditions and the way demand changes across a shift can alter the recommendation. A membrane system that suits one process may be unsuitable for another process using the same volume of gas.
What Must Be Confirmed Before Sizing the Generator?
A generator cannot be selected accurately from annual nitrogen use alone. We gather the process specification and examine how the site operates.
A useful assessment needs:
- Required purity or maximum residual oxygen
- Normal and peak nitrogen flow
- Delivery pressure at the point of use
- Operating hours and changes between shifts
- Compressed-air inlet conditions
- Verified spare compressor capacity
- Receiver and nitrogen storage requirements
- Backup gas provision during maintenance or downtime
The feed-air system matters as much as the generator. Insufficient compressor capacity can affect the wider compressed-air network, while moisture or contamination can compromise generator performance. We verify these conditions rather than assume the existing compressor can carry the additional demand.
Our guide to the benefits of on-site nitrogen generation explains where reduced delivery dependence and control over production can support the business case.
What Should the Commercial Assessment Include?
Bradford Council identifies food manufacturing, engineering and chemicals among the district’s established strengths in its Bradford district context. Nitrogen requirements within those sectors can differ sharply, so a general Bradford price would tell a buyer very little.
The assessment should include equipment cost, compressed-air energy use, air treatment, installation, storage, planned maintenance, backup gas and the cost of lost production during downtime. We provide clear, agreed pricing and quote work outside the agreed plan separately.
Delivered gas can remain the better option where consumption is low or highly intermittent. That decision cannot be settled without actual usage data and the process requirement.
Safe Installation and Ongoing Support
Nitrogen is colourless and odourless. The Health and Safety Executive warns that it can displace air and create an asphyxiation hazard. Ventilation and any oxygen monitoring must follow the site risk assessment.
Installation planning should also cover isolation, discharge arrangements, access for maintenance and continuity during servicing. Search Air supports industrial sites across Yorkshire and the East Midlands with installation, planned maintenance and emergency call-out access. Our air compressor services in Bradford can cover the compressed-air equipment supplying the generator as well as the associated treatment system.
Arrange a Nitrogen Assessment in Bradford
Send us your required purity, pressure, normal and peak flow, operating hours, current gas consumption and available compressor details. We will assess PSA and membrane options, confirm the supporting equipment and provide a quotation based on the complete nitrogen system.
