Nitrogen Generator Barnsley
Another cylinder bank is due to be changed while production is still running. For a Barnsley industrial site, an on-site nitrogen generator can remove that dependency when flow, purity and pressure justify the change. Search Air, Atlas Copco Premier Distributor since 2002, assesses the process, compressed-air supply and production risk before recommending PSA or membrane generation.
Where On-Site Nitrogen Fits in Barnsley
Barnsley Council’s Inclusive Economic Growth Strategy 2025 to 2030 identifies manufacturing, transport and related industrial activity as important employment sectors. Furniture and specialised construction are among the areas showing growth.
A sector label doesn’t determine whether a site needs nitrogen. The application does. We need to know where the gas is used, the required quality and what happens to production if the supply falls below specification.
Our range of nitrogen and oxygen generators provides a starting point. Equipment selection follows the process assessment, not the other way round.
PSA or Membrane Nitrogen Generation?
Membrane systems suit many moderate-purity duties. PSA should be assessed where the process needs higher purity or a tight residual-oxygen limit.
Pressure swing adsorption, or PSA, passes compressed air through alternating carbon molecular sieve beds. A membrane generator separates gases by differential permeation through hollow fibres, as described in Parker operating guidance.
| Decision Point | Membrane Assessment | PSA Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Nitrogen quality | Moderate-purity duty | Higher purity or tight residual-oxygen limit |
| Separation method | Hollow-fibre membranes | Alternating molecular-sieve beds |
| Feed air | Clean, dry compressed air | Clean, dry compressed air |
Atlas Copco’s nitrogen generation guidance confirms that both technologies require clean, dry compressed air. Inlet treatment and spare compressor capacity are therefore part of the generator specification.
What a Barnsley Site Assessment Must Establish
A useful assessment starts with measured demand and the process specification. We’ll establish:
- Required nitrogen purity or residual-oxygen limit at the point of use
- Normal, minimum and peak flow
- Operating pressure and whether a booster is required
- Shift pattern, duty cycle and expected changes in demand
- Available compressor capacity and feed-air condition
- Acceptable interruption time and the need for storage or backup gas
Our guide to the benefits of on-site nitrogen generation explains the wider operational case. The site assessment decides whether those benefits apply to your process.
A production-critical application may need a receiver, high-pressure storage or backup gas. Another site with steady, non-critical demand may not. That decision can’t be settled from annual cylinder use alone.
What Does a Nitrogen Generator Cost?
Generator price is only one part of the calculation. The commercial assessment must include compressor electricity, air treatment, storage, installation, planned maintenance, backup gas and the cost of lost production during an interruption.
Flow, purity and pressure drive equipment size. Higher pressure may also require a booster. We provide clear, agreed pricing once those requirements are defined, with work outside the agreed scope identified and quoted separately.
Safe Installation and Continuing Support
Nitrogen is colourless and odourless. The Health and Safety Executive’s asphyxiation guidance warns that inert gases can displace air and create an asphyxiation hazard. Ventilation and any oxygen monitoring must follow the site risk assessment.
Search Air supports Barnsley from our Yorkshire network, including our Sheffield and Leeds depots. We can assess the compressed-air supply, install the generator and associated treatment or storage, then maintain the completed system. Our wider air compressor services in Barnsley cover the feed-air equipment that keeps nitrogen production within its intended operating conditions.
Arrange a Nitrogen Generator Assessment
Contact Search Air with your required purity, flow, pressure, operating hours and current gas-supply arrangement. We’ll assess PSA and membrane options against the process and identify any treatment, storage, booster or backup requirements before preparing a quotation.
